Ginger and I began dating in 1960, married in 1965, and lived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, until 1967 while I finished my undergraduate work in political science. We moved to Charlotte, where she was a school teacher and I worked in various positions in the City of Charlotte personnel department.
I obtained an educational leave and we again lived in Chapel Hill from 1971-72 while I worked on a Master of Public Administration degree. We returned to Charlotte and resumed our careers, remaining there until 1974, when I was appointed Assistant City Manager of Decatur, Georgia. Ginger continued her work as a middle school music teacher until Lauren was born in 1977. She eventually resumed work as the school secretary for Lauren's elementary school.
We remained in Decatur until 1989. That year, I was appointed Public Safety Director of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Ginger became the school secretary/bookkeeper/business manager for a middle school in Chapel Hill.
In 1990, I was selected by the Council as Town Manager. I served in that post for sixteen years, until I retired in 2006. I also was an adjunct faculty member in the UNC School of Government, teaching the courses in city and county management in the Master of Public Administration Program from 2002 to 2008.
Ginger and I moved to Prescott, Arizona, in 2010. Prescott is in the central mountains, in the middle of the Prescott National Forest. We traveled, hiked, and served as volunteers for the US Forest Service and the Highlands Center for Natural History.
In March, 2022, we moved to DeLand, FL, a small college town (Stetson University) and are enjoying exploring our new state and visiting with our daughter and her family.
Ginger and I both volunteer at the Lyonia Environmental Center.
Some of my favorite memories: our championship football team's outstanding season during our senior year; hours and hours at the L&M; open house at White Memorial; singing for Judy Freeman as a member of the Ensemble; Oklahoma; falling in love with Ginger.

Taftt and my brother Buck and I were friends when we were little boys living in Caraleigh, and remained friends for many years. His parents and mine both operated grocery stores, so we had some background in common. We attended different elementary schools when both of us moved into Raleigh, he at Boylan Heights, and Buck and I at Murphy, but were reunited at Morson Junior High School and continued together at Broughton. I remember delivering stock to the Cutler Street Grocery when I worked in my parents' wholesale business, and Taft often would be at the store. He was a successful in operating his grocery, I think because he had a great personality and made a friend of everyone he met. I am sorry to learn so late of his passing.
Happy New Year, old friend. I still cannot eat barbecue without thinking about your parents! Hope all goes well for you and your family. Calvin
Reid and I became friends in the fifth grade, and got to know each other especially well when I joined the Cub Scout pack organized by his mother, who was a very nice lady. We remained friends for the rest of our years in the Raleigh schools, but lost contact after graduation, except for a couple of reunions. As Mark notes above, he was a great trumpet player.. He also was a great guy.
Hope you have a big celebration with your family. Happy Birthday! Calvin

Happy Birthday, friend Ben. I hope that Francine spoils you even more than usual today. After all, when you have been on the earth as long as we have, you deserve special treatment. I still have great memories of singing with you and Bob Denlinger and the other members of the Ensemble. Come see us when you want a Florida vacation. All good wishes, Calvin
