Ginger and I began dating in 1960, married in 1965, and lived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, until 1967 while I finished my undergraduate work in political science. We moved to Charlotte, where she was a school teacher and I worked in various positions in the City of Charlotte personnel department.

I obtained an educational leave and we again lived in Chapel Hill from 1971-72 while I worked on a Master of Public Administration degree. We returned to Charlotte and resumed our careers, remaining there until 1974, when I was appointed Assistant City Manager of Decatur, Georgia. Ginger continued her work as a middle school music teacher until Lauren was born in 1977. She eventually resumed work as the school secretary for Lauren's elementary school.

We remained in Decatur until 1989. That year, I was appointed Public Safety Director of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Ginger became the school secretary/bookkeeper/business manager for a middle school in Chapel Hill.

In 1990, I was selected by the Council as Town Manager. I served in that post for sixteen years, until I retired in 2006. I also was an adjunct faculty member in the UNC School of Government, teaching the courses in city and county management in the Master of Public Administration Program from 2002 to 2008.

Ginger and I moved to Prescott, Arizona, in 2010. Prescott is in the central mountains, in the middle of the Prescott National Forest. We travel, hike, and serve as volunteers for the US Forest Service and Highlands Center for Natural History.

School Story:

Some of my favorite memories: our championship football team's outstanding season during our senior year; hours and hours at the L&M; open house at White Memorial; singing for Judy Freeman as a member of the Ensemble; Oklahoma; falling in love with Ginger.

To you.

Who me?
Yes, you!
Let's all congratulate you with another cup of tea.
A very merry birthday to you!

Bu, maybe a glass of wine instead of a cup of tea.

All good wishes, Cal

Forrest was a good fellow whose adventurous spirit was clear even in high school.  I did not know, but am not surprised, that be became a navy Seal.  He seemed always to be interested in challenging himself.  I have only fond memories of the times that we spent together.  My sincere condolences to his family.  Cal Horton
